Biography

Luís Ferreira was born in 2005 in Porto, Portugal, to Fernando Ferreira and Alda Ferreira. He later grew up alongside his sister, Luísa Ferreira. From the age of 10, he began pursuing photography, learning the foundations of image-making from his father, a self-taught nature photographer. Ferreira initially followed a Science and Technology academic path, with the intention of pursuing biology, an interest closely tied to his passion for nature photography. However, during a school break, he realized that his future lay not in science but in visual creation. He subsequently transitioned to a professional Multimedia program, where his academic performance consistently stood out, earning multiple distinctions and awards of excellence from both his institution and the Municipality of Vila do Conde. It was during this period that Ferreira discovered filmmaking. While on vacation, he produced his first short film using only a mobile phone, working for two hours with his sister as the sole collaborator. The experience marked a turning point, leading him to focus increasingly on cinema and film direction as his primary artistic pursuit. Ferreira completed his professional training with distinction, achieving the highest possible grade on his Final Professional Aptitude Project (PAP), a short film praised for his ability to manage multiple creative and technical departments simultaneously. Evaluators highlighted his strong professional potential, particularly in production, despite his clear artistic inclination toward directing. Between 2022 and 2026, Ferreira developed an extensive body of short films that achieved sustained national and international recognition. His work received official selections, nominations, honorable mentions, finalist distinctions, and international premieres across multiple platforms. His films, including Whispers of Darkness, Blood in My Eyes, Dark Christmas, No Help, The Voice, The Touch, and Where Time Sleeps, established a consistent presence in the international circuit, marking a significant stage in his artistic and professional trajectory. Alongside his film work, Ferreira maintains an active practice in photography. He has presented his first solo exhibition of photography and video, and his photographic work has been selected for collective exhibitions, including "O Pequeno Gigante," which was chosen for the Insitu 2026 Collective Exhibition. His photography has also received an Honourable Mention in the national contest Insetos Polinizadores and has been published internationally, notably in The Week Junior Science + Nature (UK). Ferreira’s work has consistently attracted attention from the Portuguese press, with features and reports published in Jornal O Gaiense, Jornal Vilacondense, Terras do Ave, Mais Semanário, and Notícias Primeira Mão, focusing on both his film projects and photographic exhibitions. In 2024, Ferreira began studying Cinema and Audiovisual at ESMAD, the same institution where he had previously completed a three-year professional internship cycle with the highest possible evaluations. He continues to develop new film projects while expanding his presence across international platforms, consolidating a body of work rooted in atmosphere, memory, and the psychological dimensions of human experience.
