I am always fascinated with real-life detective stories when the police couldn't rely on technology to help solve crime. The fact that Peace was actually sent to jail under an assumed name for another crime and nobody made a connection just shows how much luck was a part of this process as was skill. The acting is a bit wooden, the disguises do test your patience and the script is a little ponderous at times but overall the story has held up quite well 70 years after it was made in 1949.
